VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) -

More than 100 men battling drug and alcohol addictions say the kindness of the community gives them hope.

Monday, at Home of Grace in Jackson County, volunteers provided a special meal for those receiving treatment. The plates were filled with barbecue, potato salad and love. The men said the food prepared especially for them is a reassurance that they don't have to face their struggles alone.

"People that don't know you care that you actually want to do something with your life," Jesse Ryan said.

"It makes you feel good. It makes you feel like someone actually cares, instead of everybody just looking over you," said Chuck Cumberland.

Employees at Zachry Industrial Construction and Tay's Barbecue partnered to provide the meal to 100 men receiving treatment at Home of Grace.

Danny Waite, an employee of Zachry said, "We look out for places to try to help people that's maybe had a hard time in life or sometimes just needs a little extra help."

Home of Grace officials said when caring people give of themselves it helps to lift the spirits of those who are down.

"It goes a long way toward building that hope," said Josh Barton of Home Of Grace. "That's one of the most important things here a the Home Of Grace is a lot of times when guys come to us they've lost hope. They feel like nobody cares. The world is against them. For them to get back on the right track and see a company like Zachry or volunteers to love on them and support them and give them a meal, it just continues to build toward I have a purpose. God cares about me. People care about me."

A barbecue lunch will be served at the Home of Grace's recovery center for women on Tuesday.

Home Of Grace officials say several businesses and church groups have been doing collection drives of food and toiletries. There was also a toy drive so the patients can give Christmas gifts to their children.

Home of Grace is also asking the public to send Christmas cards. Officials said they'd like everyone who can to send encouraging words this holiday season whether you buy a card or make one.
