DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) -

Diamondhead, the Coast's newest city, held its very first community Christmas celebration Friday night. City leaders organized the event to spread goodwill and bring residents together for a fun time during the holidays.

Even before the event ended, residents and city officials were calling the inaugural celebration a huge success.

There is nothing like the sound of Christmas music, decorations of the season and the sight of Santa to ignite the spark that leads to the holiday spirit.

"It brings the Christmas spirit to the town. It makes everybody feel a little more Christmasy,” said Makayla Lee, of Hancock County.

There was a lot to see and do during the Diamondhead Town Green Holiday Celebration. Entertainment ranged from dance and cheer leading teams, to miniature train rides, yuletide face painting for the little ones and ornament making at the arts and crafts table.

"It builds the spirit of Christmas," said Waits Murphy, of Diamondhead.

For the adults there was a best Christmas decorated golf cart contest.

"I think this is really exciting. It makes Diamondhead feel more like a community, and it brings out all the different age groups, people like me, and we have lots of teenagers, kids to see Santa Clause, so it's really exciting," Diamondhead resident Penny Crawford said

City leaders hope to make the celebration an annual event.

"We were not sure putting together something for the first time. It's hard to predict or estimate whose going to come or what community is going to come around it. I'm really, really happy with the result tonight. You see it for yourself. At least 250 people were here, and that's a great place to start and a good foundation to add on in the future," explained Blaine LaFontaine, Diamondhead Ward 2 City Councilman.

City leaders say they will now form a committee to start planning next year's Town Green Christmas Celebration.
