PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - If you're looking for something to do tonight, the Main Street organization is having its annual "Downtown for the Holidays" Christmas event. The party begins at 5:00 p.m.
Last night, Beach Park in Pascagoula was packed as people made their way to show off their Christmas spirit for the 35th annual Christmas celebration.
"Our community is one big family, always and we want to keep it that way," Suzanne Steinberger said.
Steinberger serves as the city's community event coordinator. She says with all of the negative things going on in the world, this type of event is perfect to bring the community together, all while spreading a little Christmas cheer.
"By doing events like this we try to have that community involvement and really enjoy seeing everybody and everybody coming out to the events with not only their families and creating traditions, but also creating traditions with the city of Pascagoula," Steinberger said.
There was plenty of Christmas themed activities for families to enjoy. "Family, friends. Just Christmas and everything about it," Pascagoula resident Atara East said.
Santa Claus was even there, to listen to all of the children's Christmas wishes, no matter how long their list was.
"I wish I could have a scooter with three wheels, and I wish I could have a bike and I wish I could have a room with Ariel. I wish I could have a scooter that goes round and round and I wish I could have a car!" one child listed.
An event that began a little over a decade ago has turned into one of the biggest holiday celebrations the city hosts. Ward two councilman Freddy Jackson says he's happy to see the number of holiday participants grow every year. "This is just the beginning. We have some other great things that we're hoping to accomplish, so hopefully they'll take away that we're about moving forward and making things better for citizens of Pascagoula," Jackson said.
