JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Jackson County residents gathered in the old courthouse Monday to celebrate Mike Ezell's moment in the spotlight. Ezell took the oath of office, becoming sheriff of Jackson County. His job is restore faith in a department that got scrutinized under the leadership of Mike Byrd, and then interim sheriff Charles Britt.
Ezell has more than 30 years experience in professional law enforcement. He was elected last week to complete the final year of Byrd's term in office.
Ezell is excited about his new position and ready to get the ball rolling in the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. "I know that we can do better than what we've done over the last several years," he said after his swearing in ceremony. "I've been trained. I have the education for it. I care about my county, and I love my profession. I want the best officers working for Jackson County, and we're going to do that."
Friends packed into the courthouse to mark this occasion. Many called Ezell's swearing in ceremony a new day for Jackson County and its sheriff's department.
Ezell's first day in office will be Tuesday.
