Locals to commemorate World AIDS Day

Today South Mississippians will join forces to honor the dead, and celebrate survivors of the AIDS virus. an AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at St. Peter's by-the-Sea in Gulfport through Wednesday.

The 54 ton handmade tapestry stands as a memorial to more than 90,000 individuals lost to AIDS.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt has evolved as a tool in the effort to educate against the lethal threat of AIDS. Through statistics, The AIDS Memorial Quilt teaches compassion; and inspires individuals to take direct responsibility for their own well-being and that of their family, friends and community.

Along with the display, there will be a Service of Healing and Remembrance at 5:30 tonight. Rapid HIV testing will be available locally through South Mississippi AIDS Task Force.
