Biloxi baseball team name highlights Biloxi

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Shuckers will soon play ball in Biloxi. Votes were cast nearly six months ago. On Monday night, team officials unveiled the name and logo. It was between the Beacons, Mullets, Black Jacks, Schooners, and Shrimpers, but the Shuckers prevailed.

The name seemed to be a hit with everyone, but it's the team officials who are excited to finally give the team an identity. As the curtain was pulled back in the Saenger Theatre to unveil the team name and logo, the crowd roared with excitement. That enthusiasm carried over to the apparel shop.

“Just happy to have a team. I said when I moved down here, man they got to get a minor league team down here and finally they did,” said Miles Davis.

The store cash register was running nonstop, as dozens of customers lined up to get their Biloxi Shuckers gear.

“I think it's great that Biloxi is getting a team. I think it's fantastic. I like the name,” said one customer.

Support for the team name unveiling came from all over. Even the mayor of Pascagoula made sure to attend the event and buy some team gear.

“An investment of this size has a huge economic impact on the coast of Mississippi here. We're excited it's in Biloxi, but for Pascagoula it's a great thing as well,” said Mayor Jim Blevins.

A lot went into choosing the team logo. From the tan color now known as Biloxi Sand, to the letter B curved just like the B in Brewers, which is the major league affiliate of the Biloxi Shuckers. Even the font was copied straight from an 1800s shrimp factory sign. Everything has a tie to the coast.

“I really feel good, because the community needed an identity with this team, and now that the name is there, they have that identity. It will grow on the community and the neatest thing is people from all over this country will begin to hear that,” said Ken Young, who is the team president.

The Biloxi Shuckers team shop is located on Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard in the Biloxi Transit Center. It is open Monday - Friday from 9:00a.m. until 5:00p.m.
