OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Pavement, cones, and a half pipe, were all these teens needed to create an outdoor skate park for the day. And that's what was done in Ocean Springs. “Skaters in their own nature are urban gorillas. What we take for granted in every day, in everything, they can turn into the most fun possible,” said Michael Smith who is a skateboarder.

Since there is no skate park in Ocean Springs, Front Beach Drive became their boarding paradise with the help of a local business owner.

“It's an event for the local skaters to just come out and share their moves and styles with each other. To kind of learn, try different boards and techniques,” said Amanda Mavar Schmidt.

Schmidt owns Paddles up Paddle Board Rentals and sells. She also carries skateboards, and does a lot of business with what she calls, a growing skateboarding community. “It's positive. It brings a sense of unity, and kind of a self-esteem type builder for the kids,” said Schmidt.

Michael Smith has been skateboarding for years, and has traveled the world with it. He hopes events like this will bring awareness to the fact that there is an active boarding community in Ocean Springs. “It kind of gives the skateboarding community some more credit, and to show people hey this is what it's like. We're having a lot of fun, anybody can do it,” said Smith.

The event wasn't exactly advertised, just spread via social media and word of mouth throughout the Ocean Springs skateboarding community. As more people get involved with the sport, Schmidt hopes to break some of the stereotypes about skateboarders. “Skateboards kind of get a bad rap. They're a little unruly, a little bit rebellious, but I know this group of kids' right here. They are great kids. They have a lot of positivity to offer,” said Schmidt.

Group members say they have not actively petitioned for a skateboard, but have been discussing the steps to take to get one.
