BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - A photographer from Bay St. Louis has become a goodwill ambassador of sorts for the state of Mississippi. Ken Murphy has published several books filled with beautiful photos of different parts of the state. His latest book focuses on Mississippi's capital city, and is simply titled "Jackson."
The photographer wants all residents of the state to learn about Mississippi through his images.
"I think all Mississippians, if interested in the state, should become aware of what's out there," Murphy said.
Ken Murphy burst on the scene in 2001 with the release of "My South Coast Home." That book that featured the natural beauty on the Gulf Coast. His new project showcases historic sites, cultural events and scenery from the capital city.
Murphy has dedicated himself to lifting Mississippi's image through photographs. He's made a name for himself with a series of pictorial coffee table books dedicated to different regions across Mississippi. He figured out our state needed to be shown in a positive light.
"Whenever I talked about Mississippi, I found people had all these ideas about what the state was. Some people, a long time ago, told me they were surprised to learn Mississippi had paved roads and multi-story buildings. I said one day, I'm going to do something about that," Murphy said.
And he did. One region of the state at a time.
