D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Construction cones are still stacked along D'Iberville Boulevard to the new Interstate 10 on-ramp, but MDOT officials have opened one lane early. Drivers headed westbound can now leave the shopping center from Promenade Parkway.
"I will definitely come up here more often now that you don't have to fight the interstate traffic to get back to Biloxi," Gary Roos said.
The more convenient for shoppers the more, they say, they will come. That's welcome news for businesses, especially Ashley Furniture, which just opened this week in the Promenade. The new ramp makes the store's location in the back of the shopping center a prime spot.
"They haven't really noticed us as kind of just being here, so when they leave this area they can see us and stop in and I think it will be great for business," Ashley Furniture Store Operations Manager Sarah Lacy said. "Holiday shopping is going to be amazing, particularly this area with them leaving they can stop by and see us."
Just days away from Black Friday, the new route also has D'Iberville Police officers breathing a sigh of relief.
"It's going to make it safer for all of our citizens and take the burden off of our officers with accidents," D'Iberville Police Deputy Chief Clay Jones said. "It's going to move people a lot safer and a lot more cars."
More message boards and signs will be going up in the next several days directing drivers to the new ramp.
"MDOT engineers have really done their homework, so we really haven't had that many issues," Jones said. "We have great channelization and great signage with our main traffic plan and this is going to get them going westbound easier."
The rest of the D'Iberville Boulevard Interchange is expected to be completed by the spring. The entire D'Iberville Interchange project, including Lamey Bridge and Big Ridge Road, is scheduled to be completed by Fall 2015.
