Volunteers assemble hard hats for student program

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Volunteers spent the day at the Coast Coliseum Convention Center assembling more than 6,000 bright yellow hard hats to be distributed to eighth graders who will attend the Pathways to Possibilities Expo next week.

The event will feature more than 100 employees from along the Gulf Coast. Students will get to interact with them and do hands-on activities to help them decide on a career.

"This experience with the businesses setting up their gear, they have ships, they have police cars, they might actually get to see it, touch it," said Sandy Colmer East, a Career Pathways specialist at Gulfport Schools. "So yes, it does make a big difference. It lets them know what they might be interested in."

The Pathways to Possibilities Expo will take place Wednesday, Nov. 19, and Thursday, Nov. 20.

This year, about 200 young people who are considered at-risk will also be participating at a separate session.
