GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Libby Milner Roland believed in Gulfport's greatness. She was passionate about her hometown. Her goal while serving on the Gulfport City Council was to make her city Mississippi's best city.

Thursday, Gulfport lost one of its most vocal cheerleaders. Roland passed away Thursday morning, surrounded by family members who loved her so dearly.

Last month, the Gulfport City Council renamed Westside Pier in honor of Roland. Because of her illness, she couldn't be at that meeting.

Instead, Roland watched via Facetime as colleagues thanked her for her dedication to Gulfport and her leadership when she served on the city council.

The City of Gulfport issued this statement to honor the passing of the former councilwoman:

While we mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague, we celebrate her life and legacy. In particular, the devotion shown to her family and dedication to her community stand as examples to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Funeral arrangements for Libby Milner Roland have not been finalized yet.
