D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Veteran head coach Buddy Singleton says his D'Iberville Warriors have key players back on the turf and it really showed in Friday's 31-0 win over arch rival St. Martin.
Singleton said, "Going into the game with St. Martin we finally got everybody healthy. Of course we got an injury. Jacquelle Green, one of our outstanding safety guys got a grade two separation on his shoulder. So, I'm not sure how much he's going to play if at all."
Offensively, Warriors quarterback Andrew Bird keeps opposing defenses honest with his passing ability. Bird has 749 yards passing with 7 touchdowns. Rob Moore is Bird's favorite receiver having hauled in 25 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns. He can sky high when making receptions. Bird and Peyton Stenum alternate at quarterback and both are excellent runners.
"We're kind of use a ground game, "stated Singleton. "Our philosophy is if we can hang onto the football and keep the defensive off the field, we'll be a lot better off."
The Meridian Wildcats are led by quarterback J-Mar Smith, entering the first-round of the playoffs having connected on 60 percent of his pass attempts for 2,078 yards a nd 24 touchdowns.
Singleton said, "He's about 6-2 and right about 220 pounds and he's an excellent runner and has some outstanding stats. Hasn't had a pass intercepted."
Linebacker Barry Leonardi has been the Warriors top stopper with 124 tackles and he'll try to zero in on Wildcats quarterback J-Mar Smith. Leonardi can deliver solid blows.
