POPLARVILLE, MS (WLOX)
Poplarville ended an 8-year playoff drought by raining down on Richland. Head coach Jay Beech decided to do what his team does best, run the football. Malik Lucas and Anthony Martin were unstoppable.
Lucas has 1,438 yards rushing on the season with 19 touchdowns. Martin has 683 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns.
Getting that playoff win has given the Hornets a boost.
Beech said, "We know we can beat anybody in the state on any given night if we play hard and execute."
The Hornets use a two-quarterback system, Clay Garrett and Austin Darden, helping Poplarville post 9 wins and 2 losses, 6 and 0 at home.
"At the beginning of the season it was kind of a battle for starting quarterback but as time went on we realized we are both pretty good, so we switch in and out every couple of games, "stated Garrett.
"We don't have individuals on our team, "said Darden. "We have players who are happy to block than run the ball. We work for each other, we work hard, support each other. We're just a big family."
The Hornets are gearing up for Quitman, taking aim on back-to-back playoff victories.
