HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Before students got out of school for the weekend, they took time to honor several local veterans. West Harrison High School students gathered in the gym as JROTC cadets escorted the veterans to their seats.
All five branches of the military were recognized individually as a cadet read aloud the history of each branch and the significance of each branch's song.
Senior Army Instructor Samuel Smith, from West Harrison's JROTC program, says this event exposes the student body as a whole to the sacrifices veterans have made for our country.
"ROTC in itself is a program that is very unique to have in a school system, and then, on top of that, it is Veteran's Day. It is very important that we educate the student body as a whole to the sacrifices that veterans made to this country," said Smith.
This is the school's third annual Veteran's Day program and included the presentation of the colors and a flag folding ceremony.
