PRC High School searches every student on campus in response to gun rumor

PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A rumor that a student had a gun at Pearl River Central High School Thursday resulted in a massive search of every student on campus Friday morning. Luckily, school officials say there was nothing to the rumor, which started on the anonymous app Yik Yak.

Campus police said Thursday morning around 10:30 they came across a disturbing post on the social media app that stated a specific student had a gun. Campus police immediately took the student named in the post into custody and searched him, but found nothing.

As a precaution, the Pearl River County School District partnered with Pearl River County Sheriff's Department to bring in additional officers to help search every student as they arrived to school Friday. It took about an hour to get everyone through the line as they scanned each student with a metal detector wand and searched their bags. Nothing was found. There were a total of 12 officers on campus Friday, as opposed to the usual one.

Parents will be notified of what happened through an email blast from the school district. The investigation continues, but no charges have been filed.

Superintendent Lumpkin told WLOX News, "We take every threat seriously, whether it be a rumor or not. The safety of our students comes first."

Lumpkin said they always monitor Yik Yak, only for the safety of their students. If you recall, that's the same app that caused concerns at USM and Ocean Springs High School recently.
