PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - A 9-year-old boy from North Carolina is making his way across America, biking the entire route.
"God told me to do this," CJ Burford said.
CJ said when he was just five, God called him to ride his bike for a cause.
"Colossians 3:23, which is "whatever you do, do it for the glory of God and not man." So I asked my mom, 'Does that mean I'm suppose to ride my bike for Jesus?' And she said, 'God gave you healthy legs, and healthy lungs, you should ride your bike for Jesus, CJ.'
His mom, Katie, thought he meant just riding his bike in the driveway. She had no idea her little boy meant riding across the country.
"I believed him, but I just didn't know that I believed that that was a 'right now' thing. I thought maybe, you know, when he's a teenager or in college or something," Katie said.
After years of telling his parents he had to fulfill his calling, they started the nearly 3,000 mile cycling journey on September first in Oceanside, California.
"It blows my mind, just as much as it blows everybody else's mind," Katie said.
Eddie Holmes was amongst the crowd of cyclists that biked alongside CJ as he passed through South Mississippi Thursday. It's actually his second day cycling the coast with the young man.
"For anybody to do it is an accomplishment, but much less for somebody's that's nine," Holmes said. "What's amazing is if you just spend a few minutes talking to him, he's very articulate and very educated and he knows what he's doing it for, and that's really impressive."
CJ hopes to end his bike ride before Thanksgiving in St. Augustine, Florida. He said the support he receives from fellow cyclists keeps him going.
"It's awesome. It'd be way more of a boring day and a less talkative day if they weren't here," CJ said.
