Moss Point Mayor Hopes Pelican Landing Will Fly

Moss Point, Miss. (AP) _ Moss Point Mayor Louis Jackson has asked the board of aldermen to use $200,000 from the city's reserve account to make a payment to the contractor on the Pelican Landing Conference Center. Aldermen are expected to consider the request Tuesday.

Jackson said the money is available to make the payment from an economic development grant. However, he said the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development will not allow any more money to be drawn from the grant until the agency reviews funding records. HUD provided a loan for $1.9 million and then the city secured an Economic Development Initiative grant of $475,000. The building, grounds and land acquisition are costing approximately $3 million.

Pat Hoban-Moore, HUD's Mississippi coordinator, said the review was planned last fall. She described the review as routine. Jackson said once the review is completed, the reserve funds will be restored. Moss Point officials hope to open the conference center in late April.
