There is talk from Jackson about needing $2 billion to repair or replace bridges that might fall down. State Transportation officials point to 700 bridges with weight limits forcing heavy vehicles to take alternate routes.
We are all for safety on our highways and bridges. We are glad to hear the experts are monitoring decay and setting weight limits on those bridges that cannot handle heavy trucks and equipment. But we know we can't afford to fix all 700 bridges at one time.
Before our state starts funding $2 billion in bridge projects, we hope there is a plan that is transparent and fair to all areas of the state and that the bridges with the greatest public safety concerns become the top priorities.
