JONES COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Up in Jones County, citizens and city leaders are getting ready to raise awareness for a worthy cause, with the power of their mustaches. It's called Movember.
More than a dozen business, industry and community leaders met up to challenge each other on Saturday. The contest is to see who can grow the most glorious mustache in the month of November.
It's an effort to bring awareness to men's health issues, like prostate and testicular cancer.
The men met this week to shave, making sure everyone had an equal chance to grow the sweetest 'stache.
"There are more men going to get checkups, but I will tell you, there's still so many men that do not. If you catch a condition like prostate cancer early, then your outcome will be tremendous," said Linda Gavin, with the South Central Regional Medical Center. "If you don't, it can be extremely serious. So, we encourage all the men in the community and the women who support the men in their community to get them to get their annual checkups."
Women who attended the event were given paper mustaches to wear in order to show their support.
