OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Folks who live on North 12th Street in Ocean Springs woke up to a crime scene right outside their doors Saturday morning. It involved two of their very own neighbors.
"It scares me," on resident said.
"It is still a shock. To happen on a street that I live on is kind of weird," Kristal Smiley said.
Jackson County Sheriff's Deputies said just before midnight, 18-year-old Johnny Romero and 29-year- old Shannon Bowen got into a heated argument. That exchange of words then turned deadly when Romero reportedly grabbed a samurai sword and stabbed Bowen to death.
"Yes, they were next door neighbors. The 18-year-old suspect is the son of the neighbor is my understanding," Chief Investigator Curtis Spiers said. "The stabbing occurred in the front yard of the 18-year-old, I believe. The victim had walked back to his house and expired in his living room is my understanding."
Romero is now behind bars at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center charged with second degree murder. Deputies are not saying what led to the stabbing.
"We are not releasing any details of the altercation, of what happened, because we have to let a grand jury investigate this. We have to have due diligence through the Jackson County District Attorney's Office," Spiers said.
"It makes me speechless people would do this to each other," neighbor Butch Smiley said.
These neighbors said although they don't know all facts surrounding the deadly fight, they still can't believe it happened on their quiet street.
"Yes, it's peaceful. Kids riding up and down the street on bikes," a resident said.
"I thought you were kidding me. I can't believe it," another resident said.
An autopsy has been performed on Bowen. The fatal stabbing is still under investigation. If you have any information that can help this case, call the Jackson County Sheriff's Department at (228) 769-3065.
