LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - Students at Quarles Elementary in Long Beach enjoyed a product of the United Way's Day of Caring Friday. The kids were able to inspect the school's new physical education center as volunteers revamped the facility for the school's kindergarten through third-grade students.
The building was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The school finally received funding to rebuild what once brought students an educational health experience.
"Just making a much better teaching environment for our kids," said Lori Price, the school's principal. "I think all these years later, we were able to finally get it to where it needed to be for our students and that's just really exciting."
Principal Price said the physical education center should be finished in a week. In conjunction with the project, YouthBuild culinary students conducted a cooking lesson on healthy eating at the school.
