GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A memorial for three fallen military members from Harrison County will be going up early next year.

This week, the Harrison County School Board voted to place a plaque at the entrance of Harrison Central High School. It will honor three of the school's graduates who were killed while serving in Iraq: Shane Childers, Johnny Polk and Daniel Varnado.

Initially, a group of former classmates launched a campaign to change the name of School Road to Shane Childers Memorial Boulevard, but the board decided that all three veterans deserve to be honored.

The $3,000 plaque will show their names, ranks, branches of the military and graduation dates.
