Poplarville's Malik Lucas named Mississippi Power Player of the Week

POPLARVILLE, MS (WLOX) - The Poplarville Hornets traveled to Bay St. Louis last Friday... a date with previously undefeated St. Stanislaus.

The battle for the top spot atop the Region 8-4A ranks pit two high octane offensive teams.

In the end, the Hornets stung the Rockachaws 47-46 in overtime...thanks to the running talents of Malik Lucas.

The 5-10, 185 pound senior busted loose for 285 yards and four touchdowns, including the game winner in overtime.

Lucas claims the Mississippi Power Player of the Week honors in helping Poplarville notch it's 7th win of the season against 1 loss, 3 and 0 in the Region 8-4A ranks.

Lucas said, "Played very hard. I couldn't have done it without the line. We went out there and we knew it was going to be a tough game. It was going to be a battle but we did everything we had to do. Just got through it."

Lucas has rushed for 1-thousand-23 yards on the season with 13 touchdowns. He's netting 10.5 yards per carry.

Despite taking over solo possession atop the Region 8-4A standings following a thrilling win over St. Stanislaus, coach Beech knows his Hornets can relax.

Beech said, "He's strong, very strong. He's got good vision and he's fast too. He's run a 4.4 at a few camps this year. So he's got the total package. He can catch the ball. He does it all."

Poplarville entertains Bay High Friday night and close out regular season play on the road at Vancleave on October 31st. That's Halloween night
