Gulfport has suspended five football players after Friday's brawl with Hattiesburg

Gulfport High School athletic director Bryan Caldwell announced Tuesday night that five Admiral football players have been suspended for their involvement in a brawl following an overtime 38-31 loss to Hattiesburg Friday night.

The Tigers had scored the winning touchdown and when Hattiesburg kicked the P-A-T, a punch was thrown. That set off a clearing of both benches.

Gulfport decided to suspend the players, not the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

The names of the suspended players were not released.

Gulfport (5-3) fell to 3 and 1 in the Region 4-6A standings while Hattiesburg (5-3) improved to 4-0.

The Admirals entertain D'Iberville at Milner Stadium 7:00 p.m. Friday.  The Warriors (5-4) are 2 and 2 in the region race after losing to Hancock 34-6 on Friday. Hattiesburg travels to upset-minded Hancock (1-3).

Everyone is trying to secure one of the four playoff slots.  Ocean Springs is 3 and 1 after losing to Harrison Central 24-23 in overtime.  The Red Rebels picked up their first region win of the season against 3 losses.

The Greyhounds face St. Martin (2-2) Friday night in Ocean Springs.

The D'Iberville-Gulfport, St. Martin-Ocean Springs, Hattiesburg-Hancock and Biloxi-Harrison Central games will be featured on the Friday Night Football Showdown on WLOX-TV at 10:15 p.m. followed by the Friday Night Football Showdown Post Game Show on at 10:35.
