LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) -

University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park students will soon have some new amenities to enjoy. Much anticipated fitness and health centers are opening on the campus within a week. While fitness equipment doesn't excite everyone, it's a much welcomed sight for students.

"When it came to fruition, we were very excited. Now we have a fitness facility on our own campus so that we do not have to use the Hattiesburg facility," said Hayley Whitehead, who is the Student Government Association president.

The issue has always been that students on the Long Beach campus have to drive all the way to Hattiesburg to use the fitness center or health clinic, and it just wasn't feasible.

"That 70 miles is a long drive. So, we're just very excited that we get to have our own facility and we don't have to use or pay anything extra, like going to different facilities off site," said Whitehead.

Interim Vice President Steve Miller said the university administration understood the students' concerns, and worked quickly to find a solution.

"As an administrator, it's important to be able to hear these voices and to be able to act on them," Miller said. "So, we're just excited to have these facilities online, and we're glad to show our commitment to the health and wellness of our faculty, staff, and students."

The new fitness facility is over 4,300 square feet, features 17 cardio machines, a group exercise room, and it will not cost the students any additional fees.

"There's been no increase in student fees. This folds into their base student tuition. So any student that's actively enrolled in classes at USM, whether that's on this campus, or GCRL, or Stennis site, can use these facilities," said Miller.

The health care clinic will also be free of charge. For now, Students can be seen by the Hattiesburg campus medical doctor every Tuesday. The fitness center officially opens on Wednesday, and the health clinic will begin seeing students next week. Faculty and staff can work out for $15 a month.
