GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - There's no sign of change coming anytime soon for the old Markham Hotel in downtown Gulfport. Gulfport's Economic Development Director, David Parker, told WLOX News the city has not been able to take control over the property because the battle is still in the courts system.
As we first reported in March, an ordinance was passed to allow the city to take control over the property. But Mayor Billy Hewes says complications arose so that never happened. Parker confirmed the property is still owned by a party in New Orleans.
Many call the 87-year-old building an eyesore. The Markham building first opened it's doors in 1927, but has fallen into disrepair over the years. Hurricane Katrina was the final straw that left it in the condition it is now.
Parker says the Markham Hotel is at the top of his projects list.
