GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - American Girl Dolls are inspired by many things. From historical characters of America's past, all the way to contemporary dolls that explore issues in the 21st century.
Sunday morning, dozens of young girls came with their dolls in hand to the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center for a special fashion show that didn't just teach a lesson on fashion.
After taking a picture and then getting a new hairdo for the dolls in the doll hair salon, the show began.
"I'm really excited," Hope Simmons and Holly Eckman both said.
Cameron Anderson brought her girls, Ansley and McCharen, who were just as excited for the show.
"They just look like us," Ansley said.
"They're so cute," said McCharen.
"We love the American Doll way, and we read a lot of their books. They teach wonderful examples on how to be a good young lady," Anderson said.
As the show started, all attention went to the stage.
"It's all about the story and the relationship with the doll. The doll tells a story, and I think that's the most important part," Lynn Meadows Executive Director Cindy DeFrances said.
The stories that strutted down the runway were about historical and contemporary fashions. Behind the bright clothes were lessons about culture and history.
DeFrances says this fun, educational experience that young girls can share with their friends and families wouldn't be possible without the partnership with American Girl.
"We just want to show that we are an educational part of the community, and each doll tells a story, and these girls are part of the story," DeFrances said.
This is the first time the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center was able to partner up with American Girl to host this event. With more than 1,000 ticket sales in a matter of two days, they look forward to working with American Girl in the future to make this fun history lesson an annual event.
