Friday Night Football Showdown kicks off Week 9

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The Poplarville Hornets at St. Stanislaus clash sends the 6 and 1 Hornets against the 7 and 0 Rockachaws fighting for sole possession of first place atop the Region 8-4a standings.  Poplarville and the Class 4A top ranked Rockachaws are both 2 and 0 in the Region race.

St. Stanislaus features an aerial assault led by sophomore quarterback Myles Brennan who has passed for 2,695 yards and 27 touchdowns. He ranks 3rd in the nation in passing yardage. Poplarville features a balanced rushing attack with Malik Lucas leading the charge with 738 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Undefeated Ocean Springs has run off 7 consecutive victories to gain a share of the Region 4-6A lead with Gulfport and Hattiesburg all at 3 and 0.  Ocean Springs entertains Harrison Central (4-4) at Greyhounds Stadium. The Red Rebels are looking for win number one in the Region 4-6A race.

Both the Greyhounds and Red Rebels feature game breaking running backs. Dwayne Barnett of Harrison Central is leading the coast with 1,074 yards on the ground and Andrew Warren is 3rd with 903 yards.

D'Iberville (5-3) has two wins and one loss in the Region 4-6A standings and the Warriors need a win over Hancock at Warriors Stadium to keep within striking distance of Ocean Springs, Gulfport and Hattiesburg.  Hancock (3-4) is looking for its first region victory and rely on the talents of quarterback Chase Fagan who has 673 yards rushing and 1,500 yards passing.

The Warriors have been using a two-quarterback system with Andrew Bird rushing for 371 yards and passing for 407 yards.  Peyton Stenum has 439 yards passing with Rob Moore leading the Warriors receivers with 19 catches for 173 yards.

St. Martin and Biloxi are both gunning for a playoff spot in the Region 4-6A ranks.  The Yellow Jackets (5-3) travel to Biloxi Stadium looking for win number two in the region.  Sophomore quarterback Wayne Overman leads the St. Martin explosive offensive attack with 703 yards rushing and 1,729 yards passing.
The Indians (3-4) counter with senior quarterback Blake Johnson.  He's not a running threat but has thrown for 1,686 yards. Sophomore Tim Jones is Johnson's favorite target having haul-in 70 receptions for 1,053 yards to lead the coast.

In the Region 4-5A ranks Long Beach (1-5) coming off a 35-28 upset of Stone High last Friday, travels to Pascagoula (4-3). The Panthers are 2 and 1 in the region standings after losing to top-ranked Picayune 24-10 last week. 

Moss Point (2-5) and Pass Christian (2-5) clash in the Pass tonight.  The Tigers are 1 and 1 in the Region 8-4A standings while the Pirates are 0 and 2.

Other games of interest, Gulfport is on the road at Hattiesburg in another big Region 4-6A game.  Top-ranked Picayune travels to George County. The Rebels were tied with Pascagoula and Stone for second place in the Region 4-5A before Thursday's Gautier-Stone clash.  The Gators prevailed 17-13 and are now 3 and 1 in the Region.
