A sky high announcement from Keesler Air Force Base Thursday, the base's air show is coming back in the Spring of 2015. It's another coast event the Mississippi Gulf Coast Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau leader is thrilled to see come back.
"I think it's got the wow factor with the noise and the visuals that go on and it's a great family event. It's an all American event,” said Executive Director of Mississippi Gulf Coast Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau Renee Areng.
It's also something Areng says will bring in tourism.
"People travel for events. So the more we can encourage them to come the more we will,” said Areng.
Keesler Air Force Base officials are still working to finalize the airshow that will likely mimic the base's previous shows held in 2009 and 2011. The aerial spectacles back then featured acrobatic maneuvers that never failed to dazzle the crowds. Areng says the 2015 Spring show happens during a typically busy time in the tourism industry.
"More than 400 events typically go on from state line to state line, so there's lots of things for lots of people to do. It's a great time to be outside. And I think the air show is just one more reason for people to come out and enjoy it,” said Areng.
Keesler officials say the event may also include question and answer sessions with pilots and modern and vintage airplane displays. Aside from the entertainment, the show allows the public to learn more about what goes on behind Keesler's gates.
"It lets us share part of our culture, the military with our visitors when they wouldn't have a chance to go on the base any other time,” said Areng.
Planners hope to make the upcoming one even better than years past. Keesler Air Force Base officials say the event took a hiatus due to the Department of Defense's budget constraints.
