LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) -
Long Beach senior quarterback Bruce Mathes had an exceptional night this past Friday leading Long Beach to an upset 35-28 win over Stone High. Mathes completed 22 of 31 pass attempts for 293 yards and 4 touchdowns.
He added 1 rushing TD handing the game ball to Bearcats head coach Forrest Williams. That was the first win for Williams at Long Beach, in this his first season.... and the victory ended a 15-game Bearcats losing streak.
Bruce Mathes is the Mississippi Power Player of the Week.
"The receivers caught the ball real well," stated Mathes. "The offensive line gave me real good protection. We converted on a lot of third downs which helped us have big plays in the game."
This season Mathes has completed 113 of 206 passes for 1-thousand-436 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Williams said," He had a lot of playing experience last year, just not a lot of positive experience." He added," He got a lot better on 7-on-7 and each week of the season he's gotten a lot better. His decision making has gotten better. His receivers are improving in terms of how they're fitting into the offense."
Despite 1 win and 5 losses, Long Beach is 1 and 2 in the tough Region 4-5A race and Williams believes his Bearcats have a shot at cracking the State Playoffs.
"I told our senior we are not on a four of five year play for winning," stated Williams. "We want to win now. We want to get into the playoffs and do something now and we need them committed to that."
Bruce Mathes and company will try to pull off back-to-back wins Friday night with a road game at Pascagoula. An upset victory over the Panthers would give the Bearcats momentum in their quest for a state playoff slot.
