OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - An Ocean Springs School District bus driver has been accused of inappropriately touching a child while riding the bus. Ocean Springs Police Detective Capt. William Jackson said on Oct. 7, a parent filed a police report against Sergio Ardo Sandoval, 64, after their child told them the driver touched them on their "private area."
Ocean Springs School District Superintendent Dr. Bonita Coleman-Potter said district officials reviewed the video from the bus as soon as they were aware of the allegations.
"I saw a clear infraction of school board policy," said Coleman-Potter. "At that point, I terminated him (Sandoval) from his position."
Jackson said investigators arrested Sandoval at his Ocean Springs home without incident and charged him with one count of touching a child for lustful purposes. Sandoval is being held at the Jackson County Jail awaiting his initial court appearance.
Coleman-Potter said Sandoval has worked for the school district since 2006.
"We ran a background check on him before hiring him, and it was clean. We did another one this week and there were no updates," said Coleman-Potter. "We work every day, tirelessly, to make sure this doesn't happen. We are heartbroken. The safety and security of our kids is our number one concern."
Coleman-Potter said letters were sent home to all of the parents in the school district on Wednesday explaining what information could be shared. A substitute driver has been assigned to bus 84 until a permanent one is hired.
Jackson said the case is still under investigation and other charges are possible. If you have any information on this incident, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-877-787-5898 or Ocean Springs police at 228-875-2211.
