Pascagoula has a new councilmember

The City of Pascagoula's newest councilmember was sworn in Tuesday night. 70-year-old Marvin Pickett, Sr. took the oath of office before the council meeting. He replaces former councilman Larry Taylor.

The lifelong Pascagoula resident beat out longtime councilman Robert Stallworth for the empty Ward 1 council seat. Pickett said he ran for office to help make improvements in his community.

"I thought I could be a voice for the people particularly in Ward 1 because we have had very little participation in Ward 1 in years past. I wanted to see if I could make suggestions and get people involved in what Pascagoula is doing," said Pickett.

Pickett taught in the Pascagoula School District for more than 40 years before retiring.
