Thousands arrive early for Tuesday night's Flame Throwing Competition at Island View

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - There's so many Cruisin' the Coast events going on. One happening this evening literally turns up the heat.
It's the annual Flame Throwing Competition at Island View Casino in Gulfport.

Organizers tell us thousands have already arrived and they started showing up as early as 2 p.m.

Here's how the flame throwing works, according to organizers, the antique vehicles line up and each one takes turns shooting flames out of its exhaust.

Each vehicle has to have a custom made exhaust. The vehicles also have a manual choke, which makes the gasoline very rich and creates the flames.

Some of the vehicles also have spark plugs in the exhaust pipe to ignite the gas and make a larger flame.
Every year the flame throwing competition is a crowd favorite.

Two trophies will be awarded. One is for the Cruisin' the Coast favorite and the other is for the Island View pick.

Watching the event is free and open to the public. Registration for vehicles begins at 4 p.m. The competition starts at sunset and wraps at 8 p.m.
