Bright sunshine, waving flags and shiny hubcaps. All were abundant Tuesday at Centennial Plaza in Gulfport. That's where Cruisin' the Coast held its annual “Salute to Veterans” event. Hundreds of veterans from the VA in Biloxi and elsewhere were treated as special guests at the event.

They enjoyed lunch beneath big tents on the main lawn, checked out the wide assortment of vintage vehicles, and tapped their toes to the classic sounds of Elvis Presley with Elvis impersonator, Gary Wesley, on the stage. He even wore a military uniform in keeping with the “salute” theme.

Kelly Keys wore an “America” shirt and told visitors about the story of how he salvaged his '59 Ford after Hurricane Katrina. He lost three other cars in the storm, but the '59 managed to get wedged in a tree. Keys got the vehicle down, fixed it up and now proudly shares the story of how he (and the car) both survived the killer storm.

Steve Phillips will have more from the Salute to Veterans event coming up on WLOX News at 6 tonight.
