New opponent: Ole Miss, MSU must avoid SI Jinx

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - ESPN had cameras and studio hosts in both Oxford and Starkville prior to Saturday's colossal college football games.  ESPN covered the Mississippi State victory over Texas A&M.  CBS Sports broadcast the Ole Miss win over Alabama. Mississippi was at the epicenter of a major college football shakeup. And the notoriety from a Saturday nobody will forget is far from over.

Sports Illustrated has both schools on its cover this week.  The headline says "Mississippi Mayhem.  More Cowbell!  More Katy Perry!  The weekend the college football universe exploded and left the Magnolia State at its center".

What both schools must avoid is the SI jinx.

In the past, teams that appear on the Sports Illustrated cover don't do well the following week.  This Saturday, the third ranked Ole Miss Rebels travel to College Station to play Texas A&M.  And the nation's other number three team Mississippi State hosts second ranked Auburn.

The Mississippi State game can be seen on WLOX CBS. The kickoff is at 2:30.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant sent out a tweet moments after the cover became available.  "The good news keeps coming this week for Ole Miss and Mississippi State," the governor tweeted.  "Sports Illustrated contacted me this morning to let me know BOTH teams made the cover this week.  This is the first time ever for Mississippi State to make the cover, according to SI.  Now if we could just get Sports Illustrated to get Delta State on their cover we'd be good to go."
