BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Cruisin' the Coast officially kicks off Sunday, but if you drive down Highway 90 right now, you'll see dozens of classic car owners already parked and prepped for the big week-long event. In fact, some cruisers claimed their spots nearly a week ago.

Some Cruisin' the Coast regulars say they love this event because it gives them a chance to bring the term class back to classic cars.

"This is a 1957 Chevy two door, hard top Bel Air, 100 percent original. I've changed a few things on it, but this car was under water for Hurricane Katrina," Donald Ducote, of Slidell, LA, said as he showed off his classic whip.

He arrived in Biloxi with his family and friends Thursday evening.

"We just go to the car shows all over. Wherever they are, we go," Ducote said.

Ducote says he's proud of this black beauty that he recovered and restored after Hurricane Katrina, and he isn't willing to let it go.

"It's a rate car. A lot of people want it. Everybody wants it, but it's not for sale," Ducote said.

Ducote's buddy, Bill Dekemel, says he has loved cars his entire life.

"It's just a passion for old cars. Trying to keep the old thing rolling, get them back on the road and let other people appreciate when cars use to have style," Dekemel said.

Dekemel spent the last five years restoring his stylish 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Sedan Coupe. He says all the hard work that goes into bringing back classic cars is worth taking a second look.

"We can appreciate the work that other people put into their cars to get them the way they are and to maintain them and keep them nice. That's what makes you look. That's what gets you the second look," Dekemel said.

Cruisin' the Coast festivities officially begin Sunday, Oct. 5.

A few parking tips from Sgt. Jackie Rhodes with the Biloxi Police Department: Park only in official, legal parking spaces. There is no overnight parking on beaches or services roads. Service roads will be closed at 10 p.m. each night. If you park on a resident's property, get permission from the owner before leaving your vehicle.
