New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton usually doesn't give out much information on injured players. On Friday Payton made an exception. He said starting free safety Jairus Byrd has been lost for the rest of the season.
He said Byrd underwent season-ending knee surgery after he injured his lateral meniscus during Thursday's workout session in preparation for Tampa Bay this coming Sunday at high noon in the Mercedes-Bentz Superdome.
Byrd had contacted his father about the injury. His dad, Gil, is an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Byrd was projected to become an instant play maker with the Saints after he was signed as a free agent during the off season. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and had 22 interceptions in five years with the Buffalo Bills.
