KEMPER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Mississippi Power officials announced Thursday there will be more delays and a rising cost for the company's new Kemper County power plant.
We've learned the new facility won't go on-line until sometime after next June.
The company originally expected the lignite plant to be in operation in the second quarter of 2015. Now, the power company is saying it's going to cost an additional $59 million to complete.
The SEC filing states the overrun is due primarily to construction, start-up and readiness activities, and additional property taxes and insurance.
That puts the total construction cost at more than $5.6 billion, nearly double what Mississippi Power first said the lignite plant would cost.
