BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - This week's Friday Night Football Showdown will feature six games including the D'Iberville (4-2) at Ocean Springs (5-0) clash.
The Warriors and Greyhounds opened Region 4-6A with victories last week. D'Iberville defeated Biloxi 35-10 while Ocean Springs nipped Hancock 23-22 when the Hawks went for a two-point conversion and stopped Hancock quarterback Chase Fagan to preserve a one point victory. The undefeated Greyhounds enter the showdown with five consecutive wins.
Gulfport won its Region 4-6A game last week by knocking off St. Martin 42-24. The Admirals were led by senior quarterback Richaud Floyd, who tossed four touchdown passes and rushed for two more. Gulfport battles rival Harrison Central at Milner Stadium. The Red Rebels (4-2) lost to Hattiesburg 49-21 last week.
Hancock (3-2) travels to St. Martin (4-2) in another Region 4-6A showdown. The Hawks hope to get under the win column after a tough loss to Ocean Springs. The Yellow Jackets have been battling a number of injuries and will need to step up defensively and must try containing Hancock quarterback Chase Fagan. St. Martin has a number of offensive weapons with sophomore quarterback Wayne Overman leading the way. He can rely on a host of game breaking receivers.
Pascagoula (3-2) beat West Harrison (0-5) 41-9 last Friday in a Region 4-5A opener. The Panthers battle East Central (1-4) at War Memorial Stadium in Pascagoula. The Hornets suffered a 27-13 setback to Stone High last week.
In a Region 8-4A clash, Poplarville (4-1) travels to Moss Point (1-4). The Hornets have a talented football team and are looking forward to the road game at Dantzler Stadium. Both East Central and Moss Point had open dates last Friday.
St. Patrick (3-2) has been on a roll of late. The Fighting Irish enter tonight's home game with West Marion (4-2) having won three consecutive games. This is the start of the Region 8-3A race for the state playoffs. St. Patrick head coach Tom Thompson says West Marion is a solid football team, and it's going to be a challenge for his team. Look for the Fighting Irish to try to establish a ball control ground attack behind 240 pound junior running back Kolbie Spence.
