HATTIESBURG, MS (WLOX) - Michael Gilbert, a junior infielder on the Southern Miss baseball team, was carrying a big pole with two other Golden Eagle players when he tripped.
Gilbert fell and the other players were unable to hold on to the pole. The pole landed on Gilbert's head and crushed his skull. The players were participating in a cross training fitness program.
He was rushed to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Once he was stabilized, Gilbert was flown to University Medical Center in Jackson listed in critical, but stable condition.
Gilbert was a former baseball standout at Harrison Central High School and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
