Fuel spill in Jackson County ties up traffic

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - There was a single vehicle accident shortly after 1 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near mile marker 63 in Jackson County on Thursday.

According to Jackson County Director of Emergency Services Earl Ethridge, it involved a single 18-wheeler that hit the side of the overpass at Martin Bluff Road.

The collision damaged both of the truck's fuel tanks, and it has leaked approximately 150 gallons of diesel fuel onto the overpass, down the sides of the overpass, onto Martin Bluff Road below and into some nearby drainage ditches.

Ethridge said they're taking extra precautions to keep the fuel from reaching nearby waterways.

He said the westbound lanes of I-10 should be cleared soon. However, he expects cleanup crews will be on the scene for a few more hours.
