HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Air Force veteran and former Gulfport Police Officer Todd Stewart announced his candidacy for Harrison County Sheriff on Thursday. Stewart, current Director and CEO of the Southern Regional Public Safety Institute, said he will enter the 2015 race as a Republican.

"It's time to do the right thing," Stewart said in a press release.

Stewart said he hopes to bring relationships with the community and more personable leadership back to the sheriff's department.

The SRPSI trains law enforcement officers from all over Mississippi at Camp Shelby. It is one of only two schools in the state to offer four years degrees in criminal justice.

Stewart is a 20 year Air Force veteran who has served at several military bases in the U.S. and overseas. He was in the Air Force Paralegal field for six of those 20 years.

Stewart is a Law Enforcement Assistance Program instructor for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He is also a certified NRA firearms instructor for handguns and shotguns.

Stewart is a Jackson native, and he currently lives in Gulfport with his wife, April. He is a father of four and a grandfather of one.
