(WMC) - Both celebrating their 50th anniversaries this year, Lifeblood and The Bar-Kays challenged the Mid-South to give blood for a worthy cause.

"It's sickle cell awareness month," said The Bar-Kays' Lead Singer Larry Dodson. "Sickle cell is a disease that is prevalent in African-Americans, so that is enough to concern us within itself."

Teaming up with Lifeblood, the Mid-South's only local blood center, The Bar-Kays held a blood drive Thursday at the National Civil Rights Museum from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. greeting fans, taking pictures, and signing autographs.

"We want to create an awareness here in our community," said Lifeblood Community Relations Director Linda Brown.

"People are a little apprehensive sometimes, but it's a very easy process," said Dodson.

WMC Action News 5's Jerica Phillips has previously been unable to give blood because of chronic anemia, but on Thursday, her iron levels were good and she accepted the challenge to save lives one pint at a time.

Memphis has the second highest population of adult sickle cell patients in the country.

"A lot of the [Sickle Cell Anemia] patients have to have blood transfusions every 21 days just to live," said Brown.

If only for a day, The Bar-Kays said they hope their blood drive challenge brought change to a community in need.

Since the branch came down in August, extra measures have been taken to protect the rest of the tree, like these support beams and fencing to keep people away. But the restrictions are going to be eased up soon.
