POPLARVILLE, MS (WLOX) - David Glenn Bolin drew the long straw Thursday night, and with it the honor of being Poplarville's newest alderman.
Bolin faced Stephanie Bounds in a runoff this week, but when all the votes were counted, the two candidates were tied with 177 votes each. According to state law, the winner of the election then had to be determined by a drawing of the lot.
When everyone arrived at City Hall Thursday night, no one knew exactly what the process would be: a coin toss, drawing pebbles or straws. But officials decided the candidates would draw straws, with the longest straw determining the winner.
Bolin is filling the seat vacated by former Alderman Randy Brown. He resigned after the State Auditor found he had a conflict of interest with his job for the Biloxi Police Department.
