After school program tackles marine biology

Several budding marine biologists began a new, after school program at the USM Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs Monday. The program is designed to promote and stimulate the interest of young students in marine biology.

"We just want to educate kids about the local environment. Right now in the fifth or sixth grade there's not much on the actual local environment, and so we're trying to help them learn about what is in their own backyard," said Summer Dorcik, Program Director.

The students will spend one afternoon each week participating in hands-on learning experiences on land or in water. The lessons will include kayaking, fishing, dissections and chemistry.

Monthly tuition is $150 or it's $375 for the entire three months. If you're interested in getting your child involved, call the Marine Education Center at 228-818-8833.
