If you've ever wanted to get a first-hand look at the workings of law enforcement, Gulfport's Police Department has just the thing for you. It's the Citizen's Police Academy. You can sign up for the 2014 fall session now.

Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania issued a statement saying the goal of the academy is to foster better communications between citizens and police through education. He stated that everyone benefits from people better understanding the role and function of  the police department.

People who sign up for the academy will learn about patrol operations, narcotics enforcement, crime mapping, SWAT, crime scene operations and the K-9 unit.

The Fall Citizen's Police Academy will consist of 12 three hour classes. They will take place on Thursdays at 6 p.m. starting on October 2nd. To participate in the academy you must be at least 18 years or older and not be a convicted felon.
