Tyler Bouldin and I are gearing up for another big night of high school football and WLOX will be following six games tonight that will air on the Friday Night Football Showdown.
The games include: Ocean Springs at Moss Point, Picayune at D'Iberville, Vancleave at St. Martin, Prattville, Alabama at Gulfport, Forrest County AHS at Stone and Pensacola Washington at Pass Christian.
Ocean Springs takes aim on a 3rd straight win to open the new season. Last week the Greyhounds upended Pasacgoula 26-21. Moss Point is coming off its first win under new head coach Willie Brown. The Tigers knocked off Gautier 25-14.
Defending 5A State Champion Picayune opened the 2014 season last Friday at home and beat Petal 40 to 35. You can always expect a solid Maroon Tide football team thanks to the coaching of Dodd Lee. He'll have his Picayune football team ready for the Warriors. The same can be said for D'Iberville head coach Buddy Singleton. The Warriors are coming off a 38-14 setback to St. Paul's of Mobile. Andrew Bird got the starting nod at quarterback for D'Iberville and he'll get the call again tonight against the Maroon Tide.
Gulfport will try bouncing back under the win column following a tough loss to Madison Central last Friday. The Admirals were coasting to what look like their second win of the season until quarterback Richaud Floyd got injured. Gulfport was leading 22-0. Things went south after that, a couple of safeties and turnovers enabled Madison Central to score 25 straight points to pull out a three point win over the Admirals. Prattville, Alabama is considered a powerhouse in their state, so Admirals coach Eddie Pierce will face another still challenge at Milner Stadium.
St. Martin will be without the services of junior quarterback Tyler Polk who underwent knee surgery and is out for the season. Yellow Jackets head coach Eddie Wayne Whitehead has a reliable backup in sophomore Wayne Overman who can run and throw. St. Martin also has a number of game breaking receivers with the like of Neicill McNair and Jacorey Williams and running back Tyheem Weldy. Vancleave head coach Jim Bloomfield will count on running back Walter Williams to carry the load for the Bulldogs. Williams has committed to Louisiana-Lafayette.
Stone coach Adam Stone watched his Tomcats beat Vancleave 28-21 on the road last week and tonight Stone will be playing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs football field hosting perennial contender Forrest County AHS.
Pass Christian head coach Casey Wittmann has watched his Pirates take a giant step forward offensively and kept their game with Perry Central close through three quarters until Perry Central exploded in the fourth quarter to beat the Pirates 52-30. The Pirates have the home field advantage tonight hosting Pensacola Washington.
After the Friday Night Football Showdown, tune-in to wlox.com and watch the Friday Night Football Showdown Post Game Show. We'll be talking with head coaches recapping some of the big games on tap tonight.
During the Post Game Show, we have an interesting feature with former Mississippi State head football coach Jackie Sherrill. He was at the Southern Miss-MSU game last Saturday and gives his thoughts on the job Dan Mullen has done, the Bulldogs defense and the newly expanded Davis Wade Stadium.
Get out and support your local high school football team and later join us for the Friday Night Football Showdown.
