It's time for all of our cities in South Mississippi to have some kind of non-smoking ordinance. We applaud the cities that have stepped up including the most recent, Gautier. Gautier took a stand and passed an ordinance.
You all are progressive and forward thinking. We really don't understand why any city in this day and age would not protect its citizens from second hand smoke.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency and several other agencies, second hand smoke is a cancer causing agent. The U.S. Surgeon General tells us there is no safe level of exposure to second hand smoke. It causes disease and kills thousands of non-smoking adults and children every year.
So many cities in Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee have non-smoking ordinances. Imagine how backward it seems to the people who visit from those areas when they go into a restaurant here and someone lights up. I'm sure plenty of people already stay away from restaurants that allow smoking.
If your city doesn't regulate smoking at least in restaurants, we urge you to tell your local leaders to take action now.
That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to firstname.lastname@example.org.
