HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Before saying goodbye to the summer tourism season, many people in South Mississippi are making the most of their Labor Day weekend. From family cookouts to the beach, people are out enjoying themselves. Many of them said since they work hard at their jobs all year long, Labor Day is about taking the time to enjoy some of the fruits of their labor.
Labor Day was the last chance for visitors to make a splash at Gulf Islands Water park this year. Some people say they had such a good time here, they kept coming back over and over again.
Zayn Berggren of New Orleans said he'd been to the waterpark 25 times this year.
"It just gets me out the house and not have to be by my neighborhood. I can get out the house and have fun," said Berggren.
Michael Daquin said he'd driven over from New Orleans at least 20 times.
"I love it. It's the most fun thing in the world to do. You get good exercise. You get a nice tan. You cool off and I just love the rush of going down the slide."
Park officials said despite a lot of rainy days, the 2014 season was a good one.
"Any time the weather has been pretty, the crowd is out," said General Manager Mark Moore. "They support us. Come out and enjoy the slides and getting wet. We've had a lot of other entertainment options this year. So there's been plenty to do with some different things. A lot of fun."
Still others chose to spend their Labor Day enjoying the sun and sand at the beach. They said people who work hard at their jobs deserve some time for rest and relaxation.
Joy Lewis of Atlanta said, "Down time and you're enjoying each other. You're meeting new people. Sunshine, if the weather permits."
"It's really nice and we just love to play in the water," said Britini Mayo. "The kids love the sand and it's a good family environment."
Although the 2014 summer tourism season is coming to a close, some people are already thinking of all the fun they'll have next summer.
Zayn Berggren is a little sad the waterpark will be closing for the season, but they'll be back next year. "Maybe I'm going to punch it up to 26 times a year."
Gulf Island Waterpark will be back open again in May. Officials said season tickets will go on sale for the 2015 season on Thanksgiving day.
