MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

The first ever Wake Up Project: Back to School Celebration was held for students in Moss Point Saturday. Hundreds of kids trekked to downtown Moss Point for some free food and fun. There were also supply giveaways, games motivational speakers, and informational booths at the event.

Organizers said it was an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of a new school year, while also providing valuable resources to promote academic success.

"We know the community starts on Moss Point with the school district and students. We feel like once we can get the students and the school district working together, then that will affect community development, and once you have community development and then hopefully that will affect economic development as well," Jhai Keeton said.

OnPoint, a community collaboration of parents, students, educators and community members, sponsored the back to school event.
